Having your own passport does account for your individual proof of legal identity. People under the age of 18 are considered minors in India. Thus, minors can apply for their own passport from Passport Seva Online under the “Passport for Minor’ section. Passport for Minors allows children to own their passport. This makes it no longer acceptable to have minors’ names endorsed on their father’s passport, according to the new guidelines released by the Indian government. Also, passports for minors come with a 36-page booklet.
A parent or legal guardian may apply for a minor’s passport. Furthermore, a minor’s passport cannot be issued without the permission and consent of either the parent or the legal guardian.
The procedure to apply for a minor’s passport is as follows:
Schemes | Documents |
Identity Document or Certificate | Annexure A |
Statement of one parent or guardian for minor passport | Annexure C |
Parent or guardian’s declaration for minor passport | Annexure D |
Sample affidavit to replace a lost or damaged passport | Annexure F |
No Objection Certificate | Annexure G |
Prior Intimation Letter | Annexure H |
Acknowledgment to affirm the information provided in the application for a minor | Annexure I |
Special circumstances for children who need passports | Annexure 12 |
The passport of a minor is valid for five years or until he becomes eighteen. However, minors between the age of 15 and 18 may apply for a passport that is good for 10 years rather than one that is valid until they turn 18. Furthermore, the passport application fee may vary based on the category a minor selects, in addition to the cost for a passport valid for 10 years. A passport for 10 years costs more than a passport valid till the minor is 18 years old. It’s important to remember that a 10-year passport may only be obtained after a complete police verification.
